i have an amd sempron cpu and i wanted linux debian after i heard about it from one of my friends .. i visited the website and downloaded a package for amd64 (thats the closest match) but its not installing on my system is there anything i can do to make it run....

I'd just try the standard distribution (32 bit). I don't know if the Sempron is already a 64-bit machine. Don't be fooled by the "amd" naming in the distribution's name!
I have both (32-bit and 64-bit) Debian-derived Ubuntus installed on different machines, depending on the equipment. Both run as expected. Some newer Elmer developments or error corrections may need a re-compilation from the SVN archive. But just to get the system up and running you should try the canonical inclusion from the respective repositories.
