Relaxation factor

Post by Captain Slow »

Howdy,

My qualitative understanding about the relaxation factor is that it essentially averages a quantity (say, velocity in N-S equation) over more than one step. As such it suppresses circulation/vortices in N-S such that convergence can be achieved more easily.

Is that correct?

Hi John

Yes, in the nonlinear iteration when you have a proposed new velocity only a certain fraction (the relaxation factor) of it is accounted and the rest is the old velocity. If the nonlinear iteration converges it will have no effect on the solution in the end.

Thanks for your reply!

The point you make with respect to the solution converging in the end is a good one-one that I had not really thought about.
