Relaxation Factor

Post by Andrea_P »

I was reading the chapter of Navier-Stokes equations in the models' guide, but I did not understand the section concerning the relaxation factor.
How does it enter in the Newton/Picard method for the resolution of the non-linear term? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Andrea,

Relaxation factor simply determines how big a share you take from the suggested new solution in a nonlinear iteration cycle. The parameter should be in ]0,1]. Value 1 is something that you would use if you have no convergence issues. Sometimes this can however overshoot and value 0.3...0.7 may give you better robustness.
