I'm running into the same problem when using the smitc solver in an eigenvalue problem. Looking at the code in dnaupd.f, an error with info = -9999 means "Could not build an Arnoldi factorization." I haven't had a chance to dig into the problem further. The test platesEigen runs OK, but that's using an iterative solver.
