Periodic Boundary Conditions

How does one implement periodic boundary conditions? I don't find any tutorial, documentation, or forum post that describes the variables. Specifically, what is "Periodic Boundary ID"?

There are the following minimalistic examples in the tests directory:
periodic1, periodic2, periodic_explicit, periodic_nonconforming, periodic_offset, periodic_offset2 and periodic_rot
