Solidworks Importing to Elmer GUI

Post by p144407 »

Hello,

I am new to Elmer. I am working on a Windows Vista 32bit system.

I would like to import multi-body 3d models from Solidworks to Elmer, but to date have not had success. I have however been able to import single parts (.sldwrks files) from solidworks with some success. There are still some problems here, however that seem to depend on geometry.

To import multi-body components, I have tried to save the solidwork Assemblies as STEP files, and open these STEP files with the Elmer GUI. Am I missing a step? Everytime I try this I get a response from the Log Window which says intersecting elements, and later the Elmer GUI crashes.

Is there a better method to convert 3d Assemblies for the Elmersolver?

It seems to me that you would need to make a mesh for your geometry. You can do this using a meshing tool like, for example, gmsh (www.geuz.org/gmsh). You can export your solidworks geometry in STEP format, open that with gmsh, mesh it, save the mesh in .msh format, and open that with Elmer.

HTH,

Matthias
