ElmerGrid - barrel.grd - why the top step did not rotate?

Hi,

I am reading the ElmerGrid manual. There is an example named: barrel.grd. I noticed that in the output, only the bottom two steps rotated to give cylindrical structure. But the top step rotated to give cube, instead of cylinder. Why?

Thanks

Hi

If you want a cylinder you cannot rotate the innermost elements as they would become singular. ElmerGrid does not rotate the innermost unit cell and makes some trickes to get a nice mesh topology. This is seen in the "barrel" case. If you would like to have a real cylinder you should always have at least two subcells in the radial direction.

Got it. For example, in the same barrel.grd case, changing the first line in material structure from 1 0 0 to 1 1 0 creates a cylinder on top as well.

-----------
Material Structure in 2D
1 1 0
1 1 0
1 1 1
End
--------------

Thanks a lot.
