Microfluidics, anyone?

Post by LenSanchez »

Since ELMER has several microfluidics examples and I work (sometimes) in designing microfluidic chips. I was thinking about putting together a tutorial of how to design microfluidic chips using only open-source software (FreeCAD, ELMER, OCTAVE). I know several people (in different labs) that specialize in microfluidics that I know will find the tutorial very helpful.

I was wondering if anyone has a comments, examples, descriptions, discussions that they would like me to include.

I will of course run the tutorial by a couple of people for accuracy before posting online.

Hi Len

Sounds useful. If suitable for your purposes, you can freely add the stuff in http://www.elmerfem.org/wiki. You could create a new application area therein.

I think that Elmer has been used for microfluidics by quite many. However, not much of this work has been gathered. In Elmer there are some special features of the Navier-Stokes that are meant for microfluidcs such as slip BCs and electrostatically driven flows. There is also a preliminary particle tracker that could be used to study separation phenomena.

Generally I use LEDIT or ILLUSTRATOR to design my microfluidic mask.
I found some advice on http://www.elveflow.com to fabricate my microfluidic device but its quite impossible to find information to find a good software to design the mask itself. So for the moment I continue to use software found by myself but for a public laboratory its quite :oops:

Hello,

If you want information about microfluidic, sometimes you can find your information in:
- the tutorial section of http://www.elveflow.com/microfluidic/8- ... -community
- and for basic information about microfluidic there is a beginner tutorial : http://www.elveflow.com/microfluidic/67-microfluidics

PS: I hope you will like them, since I participate to the redaction of those tutorials

Open Source Additive Manufacturing

Post by pr3cision »

While we are on the topic of Open-Source tools,
I have to brag about the open-source machine I use to produce my microfluidic chips.

The Asiga line of additive manufacturing systems have cut the production time down immensely;
the machines are open-source so I use whatever material I want;
and the company that provided me with these tools provided free support.
