[SOLVED] Fusion 360 (3D CAD) to Gmsh to ElmerGUI

Post by ScientistRenzo »

Hello :D,

It would be nice to know how I could make Fusion 360 (3D CAD) work with Gmsh/Salome and then ElmerGUI.

I would build complex geometries on Fusion 360 -> export STEP -> Gmsh/Salome 3D mesh -> Open file in ElmerGUI.

Unfortunately, I made a cube on Fusion 360 -> export STEP -> Gmsh 3D mesh -> Open file in ElmerGUI and it had 3 bodies.

I''m not sure why. I'm going to try Salome. It would be nice to know why this may have happened and/or how to avoid it.

I'm not comfortable with Gmsh/ElmerGrid so it would be nice to use Fusion 360 for complex geometries.

Thanks :) !

Are there 3 volumes in Gmsh? If so you can use Physical Groups Volume, select all three and it will become 1 body in Elmer. Also in Elmer you can make three bodies one by doing.

Body 1
Target Bodies(3) = 1 2 3
Name = "Body 1"
Equation = 1
Material = 1
Initial condition = 1
End

Can you post the step file? I can take a look at it?

I can check Gmsh, thanks!

About combining bodies in Elmer, will combining those bodies have any consequences such as counting nodes or elements twice, double layered walls/boundaries, or anything like that? I wonder how that procedure combines the three bodies...

You got it :D

I had 3 volumes by accident. Easy fix then. Woohoo, that's good.

As long as there are no coincident nodes there will be no double layered walls/boundaries between the volumes. Coherence command in gmsh eliminates coincident nodes
