Transmission loss for a soundproof enclosure

Hello everyone! I am an italian student and I am new in the forum! I want to ask some questions... I have to build a soundproof enclosure for an electrodynamic shaker. I want to simulate the Transmission Loss of this enclosure to have an idea of my work! Is it possible in Emler? If yes, do you have some tips?

Hi,

welcome to the forum.
To get started with Elmer, have a look at the documentation here: https://www.csc.fi/web/elmer/documentation
It is possible to do acoustics simulation with Elmer. There are acoustic cases in the tutorials (unfortunately not using ElmerGUI) - you can download the ElmerTutorials_nonGUI.pdf under the link on top of the documentation page. You can also search this forum, there are quite some discussions on acoustics.
You will need to make a mesh and do postprocessing. The recommended toos for that are gmsh (http://gmsh.info), Salome (http://salome-platform.org) and ParaView (http://paraview.org).

Hi

Do you want to simulate acoustic or electromagnetic waves?

For acoustic waves you would use HelholtzSolver and for electromagnetic ones the VectorHelmholtzSolver. There are at least test cases for both, probably not any tutorials.

Hi Francesco,

at the moment I’m facing a nearly identical problem i.e. the transmission loss through a sound isolating structure. Did you solve the problem and if so, could you provide some advice on setting the boundary conditions? In principal I would like to simulate an infinitely large sound isolating plate with a plane wave arriving a one side being partially reflected (ideally partially absorbed) and partially transmitted. Therefore, I would use a plane wave port on the sides normal to the surface of the plate and periodic boundary conditions (Floquet ports). Maybe this can also be done in 2 D to speed things up a little… Nevertheless, I'm struggling setting the boundaries right ...
