Unfortunately there is no canonical paper that could be used. The articles related to Elmer have almost always been related to certain application. So you could pick a paper that is relevan to your field in the "White Papers" section or just use the www pages or documentation as reference, is possible.

Hi All,
For citation of works on Elmer Software, the following research works or information or profiles can be utilized to find sources or relevant literatures:
1. https://www.csc.fi/web/elmer/white-papers
2. Some of the puplications on elmer
3. Google scholar profile of Peter Raback with works on Elmer and their corresponding citing works which use Elmer for numerical calculation or simulation
4. Google scholar profile of team members of Elmer
