large models with Elmer

Post by mark smith »

Hi Elmer team,
What is the largest 3D problem (number of elements) that Elmer has successfully solved & for multiprocessor parallel solves what is the limit of the number of processors (if there is one)?
Would the answer to the above be different for a Linux or Windows 64 bit OS?
I ask as I'm wondering if I was to migrate to Linux from windows would I have fewer problems? Is Elmer under Linux more stable?
Best regards
Mark

Hi Mark

Largest runs have been with around 10^9 elements and 10^4 cores. This is not realistic with all models, and always requires good choices for linear solvers. There are even some special models that have not been parellized at all.

Generally all development and all large runs that I know of have been done with Linux. Currently there is also MPI version for Windows but at least we developers almost never use it.

Hi Peter,
Thank you for the reply, my model or hardware will not challenge the largest run record ;-) So we will try to install it on an Ubuntu workstation.
Are there any detailed instructions in compiling it with mpi & MUMPS using the preferred cmake method, the wiki instructions for compiling parallel version at http://www.elmerfem.org/elmerwiki/index ... on_(Linux) seem to still use make, or are these http://www.elmerfem.org/elmerwiki/index ... sing_Cmake the most up to date instructions?

Thanks in advance.
Best regards
Mark
