ElmerGUI tutorials updated - user input requested

Post by raback »

Hi

Rich has been graciously fixing, correcting and updating the ElmerGUI tutorials and related files in a true spirit of open source, see
https://github.com/ElmerCSC/elmerfem-manuals

These are now also available as pdf and zip files in
https://www.nic.funet.fi/pub/sci/physics/elmer/doc/

It would be nice to have some input. If we work a little to extend the tutorials and GUI functionality further.

1) What module (XML file defintion) are you most missing in ElmerGUI?
2) Would you have an idea for a simple GUI tutorial in an area not covered by the current ones?

With the current resources the GUI cannot cover everything but it could still cover some more. If you are interested in participating in the work (testing GUI for a module or providing an almost ready test case) please don't hesitate to contact us (you can PM me on this forum).

Hello,

After looking at some of the forum posts from beginners, it would seem sensible to have a 'Get Started with Elmer' document. Some of the basic steps may not be obvious to someone new to Elmer, steps that are familiar to experience users.

Hello,

After finding the slides titled 'ElmerSif.pdf', it would be nice to rewrite the slides into a tutorial format and include the document in the ElmerGUI manual. Would it make sense to start writing a new .sif from the beginning, or would it make more sense to use ElmerGUI to generate the beginning of a .sif file?

If one uses ElmerGUI as a basis to begin a new .sif, then the layout and format of the .sif file would be consistent from case to case. In other words, let the .sif generator built into ElmerGUI create the new .sif, then add solvers manually that don't exist in ElmerGUI, such as StreamSolver. For example, if the tutorial started by recreating the TwelveSolver .sif, adding solvers one at a time, then it would be a good example of how to develop any new combination of solvers in ElmerGUI and solvers that are not yet in ElmerGUI.

Additional documentation on how to add equations to ElmerGUI would be great!

I'm very interested in coupling particle dynamics with an electrostatic field. My goal is to use Elmer to simulate ions traveling through an electrostatic lens. Is there an XML for the particle dynamics solver?

Elsewhere on the forum, it was mentioned that something similar has been done (presumably with the command line interface). Is there an example that can be posted?

Hello,

Adding new edf XML menus to ElmerGUI is always a desirable goal. Documentation on how to create/edit new edf menus hasn't been written up, at least not recently. Here's a link to what could be the start of a document:

https://github.com/ElmerCSC/elmerfem/pull/272

Hope this helps a bit.

Hello,

Adding new edf XML menu files for use with ElmerGUI requires knowing the solver related keywords. The following forum thread discusses how to find keywords.

viewtopic.php?t=7657

Note the official list of keywords used by ElmerSolver is named 'SOLVER.KEYWORDS' and is located in elmerfem/fem/src.
