Elmer does not care about units as long as the user is consistent across constants, materials, loads, and length. The built in constants, and material library is in SI units, so if you use those, then length is in SI (meters). If you want length to be mm, than materials, constants, and loads have to be in mm.

Have you tried direct linear solver?

For iterative solvers 500 iterations is not much. Try 5000 and remove the futile nonlinear iterations.
