Injection molding simulation

Post by sasha »

Hi all,
i'm interesting if elmer can simulate plastic injection molding (like moldflow software),e.g. filling cavity with polymer.
i need non-isothermal solution, because i'm look for temperature distribution after filling.
if yes, i will very grateful for some guidelines or better simple tutorial.
Thank in advance

Hi Sasha

Not having any knowledge on injection molding it is difficult to say. Also webpage of Moldflow does not specify what numerical methods are used. A more generous reference gave even some equations http://www.mate.tue.nl/mate/pdfs/416.pdf. Based on that I would say that some academic cases probably could be modeled but that would require some dedication. You could check up some test cases on levelset for starters.

Hi all,
it has been a lot of time since my last post. Do you really think it would be possible to perform mold filling simulations ??
For what i know many old "moldflow-like" commercial software work with 2.5D (shells) with a lagrangian interface between the 2 phases. Now i presume that a full 3d levelset eulerian approach is used. I'm really interested in it and i would like to work strongly on making such a simulation feasible with Elmer.

Starting from levelset should be the right decision for this simulation?

I'll browse for some tutorials.

Thanks for any future hints.
