Elmer group in LinkedIn

Dear Elmer Users,

This is just to inform that there is since some time a group "Elmer finite element software" in the LinkedIn professional network.

http://www.linkedin.com -> Groups -> Search "Elmer"

The group is open to all users and followers of Elmer finite element software. All discussions should be at least weakly related to Elmer. The intent of the group is not to replace the discussion forum at http://www.elmerfem.org/forum. This will remain as the main forum for technical questions. The linkedin group could include more meta level discussions. It will also be an alternative forum where news on software updates, courses and other events are posted.

Best regards,
ElmerTeam

Hi

How is the LinkedIn group doing? It has now grown to 50 persons giving a joining frequency of ~0.3/day (this forum has ~1000 accounts giving a frequency of ~1.1/day).

Hi,

does one have to be member to find the group? I didn't find an "Elmer" group in the groups directory.
Is that group more responsive than this forum, where there is a certain probability to get no answer to a question... ;)

Hi Matthias

I think the group should be found even though not a member. It is not intended to replace this forum. There is the difference that people are there with their real names and perhaps more oriented towards strategic discussions. So I would hope to see some meta level discussions and leave the technical details here.

The problem with free public support for open source software is that it is free ;-) The funding of Elmer development comes from a number of projects and this support has the lowest priority. Personally I do most of it in free time.

Hi Peter,

I have received an invitation e-mail from your LinkedIn account, but don't know what to do with it - there is no link to click on to join the group. And Elmer does not figure on http://www.linkedin.com/directory/groups/e.html.

I understand that there is no funding for user support, which is a pity - normally you shouldn't have to do it in your spare time! I and certainly the other users highly appreciate that there is support at all. Without that, a powerful and complex software such as Elmer would be less useful for the community.

Hi All,

The linkedin group has now reached 100 members. Joining the group provides a nice way of seeing who are the identities behind the usernames. Also it may be a suitable place to pursue some meta level discussions. However, This forum is still the place where to post the questions on all the details.
