I'd second Matthias with respect to Ubuntu. I consider it as the system of choice if you are mostly interested in using it as a foundation for Elmer and less as a objective of its own.
Regards,
Peter

Re: Lib version 6.1 (Rev: 4812) and SaveLine dysfunct?
Hi Peter, I had a visual inspection of the code as I could not reproduce the problem. There could have been a problem when writing to the same .names file with different procs. Also I added checks to all ALLOCATE statements. The change is in the svn. I fetched the new version and checked that every ...

Hi Matthias, Material 2 Name = "Testmat_linear" Enthalpy = Variable Temperature;Real MATC "[[0;100],Density*[0;360000]]" Electric Conductivity = 0.15 Heat Conductivity = 0.5 Heat Capacity = 3600 Density = 1000 End At least your reference to the variable ("tx") is missin...

Lib version 6.1 (Rev: 4812) and SaveLine dysfunct?
Hello Elmerers, for some reason I fetched the Elmer library version 6.1 (Rev: 4812) and gave it a test, which went okay in general. But yesterday I wanted to re-iterate a former problem containing the SaveData/SaveLine solver, and it appears dysfunct. Even though the (example) problem setting is qui...

Re: Volumetric absorption of light?
Hi Peter, Well, I think we are so far that we have more or less fixed the approach. ... A lot has already been done and even parallel performace looks promising. There should be some examples out hopefully within a few weeks. All support for testing will then be welcome. Sounds interesting indeed! I...

Re: Volumetric absorption of light?
Hello Matthias, ... I have used the raytracing tool radiance (http://radsite.lbl.gov/radiance/) and found it very reliable and efficient. To use a raytracer was my first thought as well, but: In my understanding the very method those programs use is contradictory for what we (or let's better say: I ...

Re: Volumetric absorption of light?
Hello Peter, ... But we're just working on a particle tracker module which might be used for this. ... This does sound interesting indeed! Could you drop me a note if there is some code to give it a try? It is not very urgent for me, as the objective I am after is somewhat playground-like and mostly...

Re: Volumetric absorption of light?
Hello Peter, thanks for your quick pointer to the Rosseland Approximation! I scanned some of the googled results, but judging from those texts this would by far overdo or not meet what I need, coupling the radiation intensity to the thermic re-radiation effect in a given volume. In my problem only t...

Re: display only certain bodies/faces?
Hello Pei-Ying, I am not aware of a method to hide a complete body (or, to display just one). But you can double-click a surface and hide that (Ctrl-H) to get deeper into the whole set. After hiding away some surfaces you should be able to see the ones you are after. When highlighting a certain surf...

Volumetric absorption of light?
Hello Elmerers, is there a canonical way to model the volumetric absorption of light in a partially translucent (isotropic) material? I'd like to model the transient heat input (as a transmission path dependent body force) and the resulting temperature rise if pulsed light is shone into a spatially ...
