Solved:
I went back to a previous elmer mint vm to check access out.
When the "press F1" path did not work, I went through the Elmer User window.
That works.
So, good so far. Now to see if I can get a solution that makes sense.
Regards,
Tim

user id and password for mint vm
I installed the mint vm (20170922) on a ubuntu 17.10 host, and virtual box 5.2.8, along with extensions. I get to the login screen, w/o requesting any agreements. It will not accept elmer and elmerfem for username/password combination. I tried restarting the vm, vbox and ubuntu. Still no go. Suggest...

Displacement issue (Heat + Linear Elasticity)
case.sif I have been working with the linear elasticity model, and now need to include stresses due to sample cooling. So, my initial conditions are T=400; Displacements=0. My BCs are T=300, and Forces=0. (I have used several versions of "no forces".) To simulate a free, cooling bock - co...

Re: how to compile elmerfem under Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
I would like to install a new version of Elmer on Ubuntu 16.04. And would like to uninstall the version I currently have installed. I am using a older version of Elmer (from 2013 - 6*), which I installed on Ubuntu 13.04 (vm on an early 2011 MacBook Pro). Over the years, I have installed new versions...

Re: Strains for strain energy density
Peter:
Thank you. I will look for the Elmer VM.
I will also look for ways to uninstall my old version and install a newer version.
(I note that installation on ubuntu 16.04 has just been covered in another forum topic.)

Re: Strains for strain energy density
Peter: Thank you for your thoughts. I am using quadratic tets, and I am impressed with Elmer: I am currently using about 1/4 million of those tets, and I am getting solutions on an early-2011 MacBook Pro running an ubuntu 16.04 VM (VMWare Fusion) in about 20 minutes. I would indeed upgrade to a newe...

Strains for strain energy density
I have been using ElmerGUI (and ElmerSolver) to get stresses for a problem of thermally generated stresses - with multiple materials. The computed stresses seem reasonable, but the strain energy densities are "noisy". I attribute this to inconsistency between the Elmer-reported stresses (o...

Multiple pieces, same material - differing orientations
I want to use Elmer to study thermally induced stresses in grains of Cu (say). I think I have the rotation of the anisotropic elasticity matrix working, thanks in large part to previous forum posts. I edited the Cu entry that came with the Elmer package (in egmaterials.xml), in order to introduce th...

Re: libqwt.so.6
Threads from 2014 and 2016 led me to an answer - and I put this longish reply together for my future self, and hopefully others. Solution: I edited the .bashrc file to extend LD_LIBRARYPATH: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/qwt-6.0.2/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export LD_LIBRARY_PATH And it works. And it makes s...

libqwt.so.6
I used Elmer in 2013, to solve a problem of temperature induced stresses in film stacks. I now face a similar problem, so I tried to run ElmerGUI, which I remember liking. I get: ElmerGUI: error while loading shared libraries: libqwt.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory No...
