Re: Physical Groups

Yes. The problem is that the two electrodes look similar. If I turn on only one face, then it is impossible to tell which electrode it belongs to. Worse still the electrodes are about 8mm in diameter but only 0.032mm thick, so some faces are only a few pixels high and even less in terms of "dep...

Re: Physical Groups

Thank you for another useful tip. One problem I was struggling with whilst grinding through a few dozen boundaries in ElmerFront was that everything was displayed in one of two shades of yellow (the two shades representing selected and not selected), and some boundaries were hidden behind another su...

Re: Physical Groups

Thanks, but what do you mean by parameterisation? I've not been able to find anything about parameterisation in the .geo file. I did try using ElmerFront to identify which boundary was which, but with dozens of boundaries that all look the same when viewed individually it was a nightmare task figuri...

Re: Physical Groups

I've just spent much of the day adding groups one by one and meshing. It seems the meshing goes very obviously awry unless I select all the faces into groups, and all the volumes into groups. But having done that I only get two groupings in the mesh. Needless to say they don't turn out to be useful ...

I'm modelling various designs of capacitive sensor using Elmer. I've now reached the point where the electrodes are sufficiently complex that it's becoming very difficult in Elmer to apply the boundary conditions to all the necessary surfaces every time I change a dimension. The obvious solution wou...

Re: Application fields of Elmer

I've been working with 3D electrostatic simulations of various designs of capacitive sensor. Previously this required a lot of guesswork, and there was little in the way of explanation when things didn't work as expected. Elmer is beginning to lift the veil, though figuring out all the various tools...

Re: Problem Selecting Bodies Surrounded by Holes

Thank you, that worked for me.
I'm rather hoping the more modern interfaces provided by ElmerGUI and the VTK postprocessor will be brought up to speed to become the primary user interfaces for Elmer.

Problem Selecting Bodies Surrounded by Holes

I have a 3D volume mesh that describes of various objects completely surrounded by a bounding box, discussed in more detail here: http://www.elmerfem.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2346 . Each of the objects has a different permittivity which I need to set (by setting the material). The bounding ...

Re: Handling units in ElmerGUI

Thanks, Matthias, that's fixed it.
I can't repeat the capacitance calculation problem, so it looks like it was just some weirdness that crept in whilst I was playing with various settings. It's settled on 1.4pF.

Re: Handling units in ElmerGUI

I just tried Parameter Scaling = 1e-3 in the way described (I have a model in millimeters and I want the output units in SI) and Elmer complained about 1e-3 when I ran the solver. I also tried Parameter Scaling = 0.001 , but Elmer just complained about 0.001 . Is Parameter Scaling the right variable...
